Kurzbeschreibung

The subject Performing Arts is offered as one of two subjects within the Interdisciplinary Bachelor’s Degree Programme. Please note the subject combination options.

Performing Arts is directed at prospective students wishing to teach drama or performance. Students on the Bachelor’s programme can pursue a school-based or non-school-based specialisation.
The programme focuses on artistic, specialist and teaching methodological learning content. Central elements of the programme include dramaturgy, performance analysis, history of the theatre, and drama teaching issues in school-based and non-school-based practice. Students can specialise by participating in theatre projects, going on field trips and pursuing self-study.
A diverse, practice-relevant programme is ensured, thanks to collaboration with schools and theatres in the region and cooperation with Braunschweig University of Art, Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media, Technische Universität Braunschweig and the University of Hildesheim Foundation.

Lehrinhalte

  • Besides acquiring specialist knowledge in theatre and performance, Performing Arts students primarily learn theatre practice. In the course of their degree, prospective drama teachers become acquainted with different varieties of contemporary theatre: physical and musical theatre, site-specific theatre, performance art, puppet theatre, and so on.
Studienverlauf

Students start by gaining skills in the foundations of stage practice and artistic/scholarly work. In combination and interaction with theatre practice, students are introduced to forms of contemporary theatre, theatre theory and history, and theatre education.
Depending on their chosen specialisation, students take compulsory elective modules from the school-based or non-school-based area (theatre education or performing arts) in the third and fourth semesters. Compulsory elective module 7.2 must be taken by all students wishing to pursue the Master’s Teacher Training Course for Grammar Schools. Students also pursue “self-study”, which enables them to specialise by expanding on educational, scientific or artistic topics and issues.
In the fifth semester, emphasis is placed on independent artistic practice.
Students who take Performing Arts as their first subject prepare a Bachelor’s thesis in the sixth semester.

As part of the interdisciplinary bachelor's degree programme, students with a focus on teaching have to complete a non-school-based internship as well as a school internship, both lasting four weeks. The non-school-based internship helps students to get first work insights in the area of teaching, to check on their career aspiration. For students with an non-school-based focus, an eight-week non-school-based internship must be completed.

Empfohlene Fähigkeiten

Besides being able work in schools, the Performing Arts programme presents graduates with a wide range of opportunities to work as drama teachers – for example, in theatres, in adult education, in leisure establishments and communication centres, as well as in companies or the tourist industry.
