Meeting new people during your studies

For many first-semester students, the new situation at a university may seem difficult. Unlike at school, the environment seems unfamiliar and anonymous. In your first lectures, you will meet a lot of new faces with whom you may not connect too much at first.

Events to meet other students

The choice of the same degree programme may suggest that you have something in common with your fellow students. Making new acquaintances early on is very worthwhile. No one is perfectly familiar with all aspects of everyday student life from the start. However, there will always be someone, who understands how to register for exams, how to get a library card or where the sports campus is located.

Not everyone finds it easy to approach others with confidence. However, this is not a character trait but a skill that you can work on. The start of your studies is the perfect time for this, as all other first-semester students are also looking for social contacts and you can quickly make friends with an open first impression.

Easier said than done? These events help you to get to know your fellow students.

Student councils and faculty councils

Student councils are student organizations that represent the interests and concerns of students in a specific subject area or study programme. They organise information events, support first-year students when starting their studies, collect feedback on degree programmes and work closely with lecturers to achieve improvements in their studies. In addition, student councils organize events and promote exchange between students.

Faculty councils are committees that consist of representatives from the student councils and other student members. They are part of student self-government and have a say in important decisions within the faculty or study programme. Specialist councils deal with questions about programme development, examination regulations and the quality of teaching. They serve as contact persons for students and help represent students' concerns at an academic level.

Overall, student councils and faculty councils work together to improve the study experience for students, to articulate their concerns and to promote communication between students, lecturers and the university administration.

Further tips for getting to know each other

  • Introduction week

Even before the regular lecture period begins, the most important tips for coping with everyday life at university are presented here. Many a lifelong friendship has been made at the rally. Participation is highly recommended.

  • Study Start Party

With a cold drink in hand, some people find it easier to present themselves more authentically. An informal atmosphere at the often well-attended parties means that no one notices if you leave earlier than expected.

  • Tutorium

In a tutorial, students from higher semesters guide learning in smaller groups than in lectures. Here, almost everyone gets a chance to speak, which makes it easier to establish contacts. Attending tutorials is not only recommended for socialising. The tutors usually teach from a different perspective than the professors, which can be a lifesaver, especially at the beginning.

  • Student body

If you have time and want to get involved with your fellow students, you are always welcome to join the student representatives. All students are welcome here and you can also score points with students outside of the student council if, for example, you throw the barbecue with student prizes at the summer festival.

  • Study Buddy

Would you like to meet students from all over the world? Or are you an international newcomer to Hannover? Then become a buddy and promote intercultural exchange between international and local students! LUH students who would like to mentor an international student and international students who are new to the University of Hannover can register.

  • Asta (Students Union)

In addition to the student councils, there are also interdisciplinary student organisations such as the General Student Committee (AStA) within the student body that work for common interests. Here, too, every helping hand is welcome and you can see different faces than in your own lectures.

  • meet and eat

On Fridays between 12 and 2 pm, anyone who wants to meet new people during the lunch break can take a seat at the Meet + Eat table. The table is signposted.

Registration is not necessary - just come by!
