The Alexander von Humboldt Professorship brings leading international researchers to German universities. One of the 12 winners of the award is Prof. Dr. Robert Raußendorf, who has researched and taught at Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) since summer 2023 – a big success for LUH in the competition for Germany’s largest research award. Prof. Dr. Robert Raußendorf will receive 3.5 million euros in funding over a period of five years. On 13 May, Bettina Stark-Watzinger, federal minister for education and research, and Robert Schlögl, president of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, officially presented the awards to all of the winners.
The internationally recognised theoretical physicist Prof. Dr. Robert Raußendorf, an expert in quantum information theory, previously worked at the University of British Columbia, Canada. He now conducts research and teaches at the LUH Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. The Humboldt Professorship aims to attract top researchers from all disciplines who are currently working abroad and to increase the appeal of Germany as a science location. To enable those selected to continue their research in Germany, the professorship includes several million euros of funding.
LUH is exceptionally pleased about the appointment of Robert Raußendorf, who has made a series of spectacular contributions to quantum computing and fundamental quantum theory. “On the one hand, Professor Raußendorf will help us to lead our Cluster of Excellence QuantumFrontiers into the second funding period and, on the other hand, to advance the major topic of quantum computing. Our goal in the Quantum Valley Lower Saxony project is to develop the first functioning quantum computer – and Professor Raußendorf will play a crucial role in this,” said Prof. Dr. Volker Epping, president of Leibniz University Hannover.
