Halls of residence and student apartments

There are 20 halls of residence managed by Studentenwerk Hannover and many other student halls in Hannover that offer good value accommodation – some of which are located near the university. Students enrolled at a university in Hannover are eligible to live in one of the halls of residence managed by Studentenwerk. Almost all rooms are furnished and have high-speed internet access at moderate prices. Rent usually ranges between 240 and 500 euros per month.

Other student apartments range between 500 and 700 euros per month.

Private housing

Accommodation adverts can be found on the notice boards in the atrium of the main university building (“Welfenschloss”), as well as in the cafeterias, libraries and institutes. Most adverts offer “WG rooms” (flatshares). WG is short for “Wohngemeinschaft” and describes an arrangement where several people live in the same flat and split the costs for shared facilities such as kitchen and bathroom.
Prices vary considerably depending on the location and size of the flat. Flatshares are usually a little more expensive than similar rooms in halls of residence.
In addition to flatshares, furnished or partly furnished rooms are available – usually for a fixed period (“Zwischenmiete”).

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, the daily newspapers publish accommodation adverts. You can place your own ad for a fee. The Studentenwerk also offers further tips for finding a room on its website.

The Studentenwerk Hannover has an online housing exchange and the AstA Hannover offers a "place to sleep" board:
