Awards and Distinctions Awarded by Leibniz University Hannover
Honorary senators
The title of honorary senator can be bestowed upon individuals who have made significant contributions to the public good – for example, through outstanding professional achievements or special achievements in public, official or other community service work.
Honorary citizens
Individuals who have made significant contributions to the university can be granted the title of honorary citizen. Significant contributions can also include donations.
Medal of honour
The medal of honour can be awarded to individuals who have performed an outstanding service for the university or parts of the university.
Honorary doctors in the faculties
With the approval of the University Senate, faculty councils can confer honorary doctorates for outstanding academic achievement or noteworthy personal accomplishments.
Honorary professorships in the faculties
The Presidential Board appoints honorary professors upon recommendation by a faculty council and with the approval of the University Senate. Appointees must have a proven academic record and be well suited to contribute to Leibniz University Hannover’s work. They are required to have worked at the university for at least five years.
Leibniz emeriti
The university management bestows the status of Leibniz emeritus/Leibniz emerita on selected individuals for a period of three years, with the option of a one-time extension. This status involves a prominent advisory and ambassador role in support of the LUH Presidential Board.

Teaching awards
Leibniz University Hannover teaching staff can be awarded the LUH Teaching Prize in recognition of outstanding teaching or other teaching awards.
