Research Assistant (PhD Position; m/f/d) in the field of Cell Biology

(Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 67 %)

The Institute of Cell Biology and Biophysics, Department Cell Biology invites applications for the position of a Research Assistant (PhD Position; m/f/d) in the field of Cell Biology (Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 67 %) starting July 1, 2024. The position is limited to 3 years.

The aim of research in the Department of Cell Biology is the development of artificial systems that mimic the natural environment of hematopoietic stem cells – the stem cell niche – in the bone marrow. These models are used to gain a fundamental understanding of the stem cell niche in health and within the context of various diseases.

In the course of the collaborative project Matrix Evolution, a new research associate is needed. The aim of the project is to study the hierarchically structured extracellular matrix and to develop replica of such within the laboratory. The successful candidate will work on the research and mimicry of the bone marrow as part of the project.

Responsibilities and duties

The work includes the investigation of the influence of extracellular matrix on the hematopoietic system in bone marrow as well as the reproduction of the matrix with the aid of 3D- and bioprinting. The developed matrices are used within new in vitro models of the bone marrow. The responsibilities for this include independent execution and planning of experiments, evaluation of results, preparation of reports, presentation of results at international conferences and writing of publications.

The position is intended to serve the qualification of young scientists, whereby the pursuit of a doctorate is expressly desired.

Employment conditions

The prerequisite for employment is a university degree in biology, biochemistry, life sciences, biophysics or comparable subjects. Knowledge and practical experience regarding culture of (stem) cells, microscopy & biochemical, molecular biological or biophysical methods are welcome. A good command of English and good writing skills as well as an interest in the relevant biological and material science issues and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team are expected.

The university aims to promote equality between women and men. For this purpose, the university strives to reduce under-representation in areas where a certain gender is under-represented. Woman are under-represented in the salary scale of the advertised position. Therefore, qualified women are encouraged to apply. Moreover, we welcome applications from qualified men. Preference will be given to equally-qualified applicants with disabilities.
