Research Associate (m/f/d) in the field of Biomaterial Design

(Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 67 %)

The Institute of Technical Chemistry has a vacancy for a Research Associate (m/f/d) in the field of Biomaterial Design (Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 67 %) as of 01.07.2024. The position is limited to 3 years and offers the possibility of completing a doctorate.

In the working group "Design of Biomaterials with Biotechnology" we produce recombinant proteins based on segments of the extracellular matrix (ECM), which are then used as xeno-free biomaterials in 3D cell culture and tissue engineering. Our targets are produced in simple microorganisms, which enables virus-free and cost-effective production. Desired mechanical or stimulus-responsive properties of the proteins are achieved by chemical modification.

The project and tasks

The advertised position is part of the interdisciplinary project Matrix Evolution. The aim of the project is to reproduce the hierarchical and dynamic structures of the ECM in model cell niches in the laboratory. Our group will approach this goal from the biomaterial side. The core task is to produce recombinant ECM components and use them for the production of a dynamic and hierarchically structured matrix.

Position requirements

A university science degree (Master or equivalent) in a relevant field, e.g. life science, biotechnology, molecular biology or technical chemistry, is a prerequisite for employment. Experience in the field of molecular biology, microbial fermentation, downstream processing and biomaterial development is an advantage. The ideal candidate has a keen interest in biomaterial design issues and a willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team. Very good computer skills and English language skills are also expected.

The university aims to promote equality between women and men. For this purpose, the university strives to reduce under-representation in areas where a certain gender is under-represented. Women are under-represented in the salary scale of the advertised position. Therefore, qualified women are encouraged to apply. Moreover, we welcome applications from qualified men. Preference will be given to equally-qualified applicants with disabilities.
