The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science invites applications for the following position within salary scale W1 of the Lower Saxony salary system (NBesO) to be appointed at the earliest possible date: Junior Professorship in the field of AutoML for Foundation Models

The position is limited to three years with a renewal option for a further three years.

The Position

Leibniz University Hannover is seeking a dedicated individual for a junior professorship in "AutoML for Foundation Models". The position is affiliated with the "Machine Learning" group and offers an inspiring environment for excellent research and teaching. In addition to the basic equipment, there is the possibility to use the latest GPU generation.

You will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with the “Lower Saxony Center for Artificial Intelligence and Causal Methods in Medicine“ (CAIMed), focusing on applications of multimodal foundational models in medical contexts. Additionally, there are numerous opportunities for synergies with the L3S Research Center for AI and the Leibniz AI Academy.

In teaching, you will independently design innovative courses related to the teaching focus "Data Science" for the Master’s program in Computer Science and contribute to foundational training in "Data Science Foundations" for the Bachelor’s program in Computer Science.

Your Profile

We are looking for a motivated scientist eager to actively shape the future of AI. You bring excellent research expertise in computer science or a related field, with a focus on automated machine learning (AutoML), ideally proven by publications success / top-tier conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, AAAI, IJCAI).

Additionally, expertise in one or more of the following areas is advantageous:

  • Multimodal foundational models
  • Large Language Models
  • Embodied AI (e.g., reinforcement learning, robotics)
  • AI for medical data and applications

We particularly welcome candidates who are enthusiastic about engaging in fundamental research in AutoML and foundational models while also contributing to the development of AI applications in medical contexts.

Teaching competence is a core aspect of this position. Ideally, you have experience in designing and conducting courses on AI-related topics and are passionate about inspiring students in data science and AI. Proficiency in teaching in English is required for the Master’s program. For co-operation within the faculty, the willingness to learn German is also desired.
