Statutory Accident Insurance

Students are insured through the statutory accident insurance (GUV). Insurance coverage begins with your enrolment and extends to all activities that are causally related to your studies.

Accidents that occur, for example, during courses, when using the library, on excursions or during activities in student self-administration are insured. Your direct route between the university and your home is also insured.

In the case of overseas visits, the insurance cover is only valid for events organised by a German higher education institute. Usually, only those overseas stays that are organised and managed by a German higher education institute are recognised. Self-organised overseas visits, even if these are supported by the German higher education institute and are seen as necessary for the completion of an assignment or dissertation, are not covered by the insurance.

Statutory accident insurance usually does not cover exam preparation activities outside of the university context or during internships. Students who complete an internship are usually covered by the accident insurance of the company or facility in which they work. However, this should be clarified before you start your internship. In this context, it should also be discussed whether damage caused by an intern will be covered by the company or institution. If this is not the case, it is advisable to take out private liability insurance or temporary professional liability insurance.
