Below you will learn how to enroll in a degree programme. There are differences, depending on whether it is an admission-free or restricted-admission study programme and whether you have applied from within the EU or from a country outside the EU.

Candidates from Germany and the EU

Degree programmes with admission restrictions

If you receive a place after applying for a degree programme with admission restrictions, you will receive an acceptance letter (Zulassung zum Studium) from about February or August dependin on your starting semester. You must confirm this place within a set period.

You can only be fully matriculated, i.e. officially registered at the university, with an acceptance letter. Only then are you registered as a student and become a member of the university. You can find the deadlines for matriculation in your letter of acceptance.

For the matriculation you need to:

  • submit proof of payment of the semester fee
  • apply for a digital health insurance notification, which will be automatically sent to Leibniz University Hannover by the health insurance company
  • submit a passport photo electronically so that your student card (LeibnizCard) can be issued.  You will receive the photo upload information along with your admission letter.

After your succesfull matriculation you will receive your registration documents, such as your LeibnizCard, an invitation to the opening ceremony for first-semester students, and information on potential preparatory courses in March or September.
Please note that some study programmes offer earlier preparatory courses.

Admission-free degree programmes

In degree courses without admission restrictions there is no selection procedure and you will not receive a separate letter of acceptance. You can matriculate directly (enrol) if you produce evidence of a “Hochschulzugangsberechtigung” (university entrance qualification). You can find the registration procedures for a degree course without admission restrictions on the site about application.

For your matriculation you need to:

  • submit a certified copy of your university entrance qualification (for example, the Abitur)
  • submit proof of payment of the semester fee
  • apply for a digital health insurance notification, which will be automatically sent to Leibniz University Hannover by the health insurance company
  • submit a passport photo electronically so that your student card  (LeibnizCard)  can be issued.  You will receive the photo upload information from your application for enrolment (PDF form) directly after completing the online application.

After your succesfull matriculation you will receive your registration documents, such as your LeibnizCard, an invitation to the opening ceremony for first-semester students, and information on potential preparatory courses in March or September.
Please note that some study programmes offer earlier preparatory courses.
